Overview[edit | edit source]

BallisticNG is a racing game where players control floating Anti-Gravity racing ships in various forms of races through futuristic environments. The game is characterized by its extreme speed, harsh difficulty, upbeat electronic soundtrack, and large amount of community-made mod content. It was first released as a free early access title on Steam in 2016, but it later transitioned to a paid title upon its full-release in late 2018. It is currently available on Windows, MacOS, Linux, and Steam Deck. BallisticNG offers a singleplayer campaign which can be used to unlock new ships and liveries, a custom race mode supporting singleplayer and 2-player splitscreen, and online multiplayer through Steam or peer-to-peer connection.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

BallisticNG's gameplay takes heavy inspiration from the classic Playstation series Wipeout, imitating the graphical appearance and basic gameplay features from the earlier games of the series.

Players control floating ships, equipped with airbrakes on both sides to help them turn tighter when used in combination with normal steering. Scattered around the game's tracks are glowing tiles called Speed Pads and Weapon Pads. When the player's ship flies over them, Speed pads will award a small boost of speed, and Weapon Pads will give the player a randomly-selected pickup. These pickups can be used to give the user an advantage by damaging and disrupting opponents or protecting the user from opponents' attacks. Every ship is equipped with an energy shield generator which loses energy upon collision with walls or weapons. If the ship's shield energy falls below zero, it will explode and be eliminated from the race. Ships can recharge their shield by flying through a Pitlane, one of which is present on every track.

Players choose from a roster of ships, each of which is built by an in-universe racing team. Every ship differs from the others in its appearance, speed, acceleration, handling, shield power, and weapon power. Each ship also has a unique set of liveries which can be unlocked through game progression. Details for each ship can be found on the page of its respective team. BallisticNG has a large number of tracks, each varying in its appearance, layout, and difficulty. Nearly all tracks can be played in reverse. Pages with details for each individual track can be found in the Tracks category. The game has several different types of events that the player can compete in, each offering a unique gameplay experience and ruleset. Details on all of these can be found on the gamemodes page.

Custom Content[edit | edit source]

Created to be the ultimate AG Racing sandbox, BallisticNG has comprehensive support for community-made content, meaning nearly every aspect of the game can be modified and the game's modding tools allow for custom content to match the fidelity and functionality of official content. Mods can be downloaded from the game's Steam Workshop page or directly downloaded from external sources and manually installed in the game's files. The latter is widely recommended because it allows for mods to be sorted into categories in the game's menu, making it far easier to manage. Free direct download links for virtually all custom content released to the public can be found in the "pinned messages" tab of the "mod releases" channel of the game's official Discord server.

Here is a list of the types of custom content that can be created:

  • Custom Ships - Additional Ships
  • Custom Tracks - Additional Tracks
  • Custom Soundpacks - Replace the game's sounds with custom files
  • Custom Liveries - Additional livery textures for the game's official ships
  • Code Mods - Additions to the game's code that can be used to create a variety of effects, such as custom gamemodes and HUDs.
